Contest [ Win 3 Psy'Aviah CD's ] - #Share Your Psy’Aviah #Story

Time flies! I, Yves, first started making music around +/- 2000, the first real Psy’Aviah demos and releases appeared at around 2003, that’s 10 years ago… A perfect time to celebrate with a contest.

Over those years a lot has happened for us, we’ve travelled places, played festivals, were banned from youtube, played live inside an internet-banner, got nominated by BBC, got the chance to collaborate with so many talented vocalists, opened for acts like 65DaysOfStatic, Praga Khan, Emilie Autumn… We did some special acoustic sets in FNAC stores, and Microsoft thought ‘t was a good idea to get us on board for their Windows 7 campaign, and there was the #UrbanSharing, project, etc.. etc..

And from time to time we recieved (even gifts, such as a fan-made synthesizer), or heard stories from people about our music. How the music touched them, or how they got to know us.. How passionate they are about a song, a lyric, a sound or a word we’ve created. It’s one of the most rewarding things for a musician to hear those individual stories…

So, because it’s 10 years AND because we have a new EP out, called “Future Past”, here’s our contest & the rules:

  1. Share, tweet, vlog, blog or pin your Psy’Aviah story; share it with the world;
  2. And don’t forget to send it to us at [email protected];
  3. Do all of this before 07/07/2013, that’s the deadline!

After the deadline we’ll choose three “stories”, each of them will recieve the following package:

  1. “Future Past” EP, from 2013
  2. “Introspection ~ Extrospection” 2cd limited edition, from 2011
  3. “Eclectric” 2cd limited edition, from 2010

That’s 3 releases, a total of actually 5 cd’s of Psy’Aviah music…
So what are you waiting for? #Share your Psy’Aviah #story and #win !

First review for “Future Past” EP is excellent, A+!

Holy shit!! Peek-A-Boo-Magazine did a double review (by their editors Filip and Phil) of our new “Future Past” EP, and we scored a nice 92/100! Read all about it here: [ http://www.peek-a-boo-magazine.be/en/reviews/psy-aviah-future-past-ep/ ].

Here are some quotes we especially like :

“Again, this EP is a true success! It’s like a soft dream, an electronic journey into nostalgia.”

“I don’t like dubstep but here, the elements of beats and synths are introduced with such subtlety that it works perfectly.”

‘Our common future’ has a clear guitar sound in it and Kyoko Bartsoen is joining the vocal team (love it). This one is so sweet that it feels as if you need to brush your teeth’s afterwards. I loved the sexy @Dizkodude remix!”

Thx to Peek-A-Boo for the review & understanding our evolving & experimentation in sound & songwriting: because that is what Psy’Aviah is all about!

To finish, here’s our interactive youtube trailer to preview the new “Future Past” EP:

Behind the song “Look Beyond”

In the “Behind The Song”-series we talk about the writing process, the ideas behind the lyrics, and much more… Today we tackle the track “Look Beyond”, taken from the 2013 EP “Future Past”.

Behind “Look Beyond”

“Look Beyond” explores the “Black and White” thinking present in much of todays society. Some of that thinking is, in my opinion at least, due to the fact we as humans try to defend (sometimes to the impossible, or into absurdity) our own views & believes. Examples are everywhere: politics, the anti-scientific movement (but even some scientist themselves fall into the trap), vendetta’s, taboos, homeopathy, and the list can go on and on and on… But I think you get the point: the black and white thinking is leading us nowehere, it’s important to sometimes look over the edge (hence “Look Beyond”), and discover what’s happening over there.. The truth is out there, but in my opinion it’s grey instead being black or white…

Lyrically the song enumerates a couple of “opposites”, if you can call it that way (blacks vs whites), e.g.: “There’s truth in lies”, or “Order in chaos”, or “Danger in a safe place”… Each of them represents the fact that if you’re in that situation, or moment, don’t be afraid to “Look Beyond”, be skeptical, open your mind towards other possibilities. Even if, after investigation, they lead to nothing at first, one has the knowledge & experience now.

Other lines are more personal, or less political if you will… “Good in jesus christ” is one important for me, one I need to remember myself to from time to time.. I’m atheist, I don’t believe in a god, multiple gods, or whatever.. But the values portrayed by certain religions are valuable, and why should I be blind for them.. Still, it’s not always easy to put aside prejudices (because we all have those) and have the courage to open ourselves to the good sides of certain things we’re opposed to at first.

So, that’s roughly the idea behind the track, you can read the full lyrics below and make your own interpretations ;).

For the techies…

In this track I used a lot of ethereal pads VS harsh electronic synths, this to get a contrast and make it a kind of hard hitting track while keeping some soft & mysterious pads working to enhance the “atmosphere”…

Most of the acid synthesiers you hear were created with NI FM8, as was the bassline. For those lush/mysterious pads I relied on a mixture of NI Massive and a long forgotten synth, and by some regarded as crap, the ReFX Vanguard. It did the job, it’s good at moving pads that need a certain amount of thickness, if layered with other synths/pads.

The difficulty of choosing these ambient pads and textures with a more electro-industrial/acid influenced track was: the mixing.. Honestly I feel I could’ve done better, but at the time I probably heard it x1000 times, and just couldn’t decide anylonger.. Hearing it back now, after the excellent mastering treatment at the IC 434 studio by Geert de Wilde, I feel quite happy how it turned out though!

Listen to the track

Lyrics

There’s truth in lies, order in chaos
A story behind those eyes
Danger in a safe place, lessons in mistakes
Beauty behind a face
Colors in black and white, loneliness in a crowded heart
Good in jesus christ
With love comes greed,
A difference in what we want, a difference in what we need

Look beyond your narrow mind,
Open eyes, see the light, realise the other side…

Poverty among the rich, demons democracy
Ideas through a glitch
Thunder in clear skies, tears of joy and grieves
Battles through compromise
Beauty in agony, controversial positives
With love comes greed,
A difference in what we want, a difference in what we need

New EP “FUTURE PAST” >> Interactive Trailer

To let you sample from our new EP “Future Past”, we prepared an interactive youtube video.. Enjoy!

The new “Future Past” EP builds on our previous album ”Introspection/Extrospection”, and takes it one step further. Having tasted electro-pop, dubstep and electro-house… we decided again to make it our own. Resulting in a blend of ambient-dubstep on “Circles”, ballad like electro-pop on “Letting Go”, pure EBM vs Electro-House with acid elements on “Look Beyond”, and some dubstep-electro influences VS ambient textures on “Paused” and “Our CommonFuture”. The EP reminds us through the lyrical themes how we all keep struggling with past trauma: “… time and time again making the same mistakes… I guess it’s true when they say that people never change” (taken from the track “Circles”).

In true PSY’AVIAH tradition, this EP is again crowned by another prestigious collaboration: with miss Kyoko Baertsoen (former HOOVERPHONIC artist & co-founder of LUNASCAPE). Her unique voice & timbre perfectly fits the very emotional song “Our Common Future”.
